Eternal

Eternal is a unique work of art, in the form of a totem pole, located on a rock outcropping high above the Hudson River in Ft. Montgomery, New York

Picture

The sculpture is seven and a half feet tall and weighs about 400 pounds. Set in a sleeve drilled into the natural rock, it can be rotated into any desired viewing position. Made from a combination of found metal objects and recycled steel it will achieve an organic rusted patina over time.

Eternal has two distinct sides and visual languages that share a common silhouette.

The totem pole is a reinterpretation of the traditional native iconography telling its story seamlessly from bottom to top. The Watchman at the bottom, The Goat in the center and The Eagle on the top.

These iconic figures do not copy the original forms but rather capture their energy and meaning in contemporary visualizations.

The crucifix, on the other side, is a visually understated representation of the Jesus figure in deliberate contrast with the complexity and richness of northwest coast iconic forms. Clothed in simplified forms, with varying textures, the surfaces are spaced apart from each other resulting in shadow patterns that enhance the visual appearance of depth and substance.

The cross is an iconic form that invests material objects with inner spiritual meaning.  Over Jesus’ heart is a combination cross and six pointed star that symbolizes the fundamental historical and spiritual connections underlying the Judeo-Christian faith traditions.

Eternal represents the harmonious melding of disparate forms from the northwest coast tribal mythological and the Judeo-Christian spiritual traditions. Created using an assemblage process, rather than the customary carving method, it remains true to both the visual richness and emotional power of the spiritual and artistic traditions that inspired it.
