Long Horned Masks

The removal of cow horns, an often tedious job for the farmer, was made much easier with the invention of the mechanical dehorner. A marvel of engineering, it consists of a pair of opposing lever arms, linked to a set of interlocking gears, that control the adjustable cutting blade. When less labor-intensive technologies were developed,  the once proud dehorner was relegated to the junk heap, where I discovered and rescued it.

I envision and reform these efficient, elegant, and significant artifacts into original works of art each with its own personality. Their visual appearance and  character  varies, depending upon the angle created between the horns.

The face of each mask is unique.  Ranging  from a subtle smile to a menacing  grimace they either  amuse or unnerve the viewer.

These sculptures, made from obsolete agricultural artifacts, are reminiscent of the ritual horned masks that connected primitive man to the animal spirits and embodied their intense supernatural powers.
